Brass and rope pendant lights: how to choose

A pendant light doesn't just light a room: it gives it structure. Above a table, it says "this is where we gather". In a hallway, it sets the tone from the front door. Brass and rope are two very different ways of doing this: one reflects the light, the other filters it. Here is how to choose, and the practical questions to ask yourself before ordering.

Brass, rope or raffia: three different kinds of light

  • Hammered brass reflects the light: its facets, left by the hammer, bounce it downwards and to the sides, in golden tones. It is a warm, slightly directional light that creates a lit area on a table or kitchen island. Our hammered brass pendant light is shaped like a gently curved leaf; it is hammered by hand in Morocco and made to order.
  • Rope filters the light: the knotted mesh lets beams of light through and casts shadows on the ceiling and walls. Rope adds volume without feeling heavy, and warms up a room with white walls. Our rope pendants are handmade by our Moroccan artisans.
  • Raffia diffuses the light: lighter still, it gives a soft, subdued light that doesn't dazzle, in a bedroom or reading corner. The CHIPS raffia pendant is a good example: 41 cm at €65; the 61 and 81 cm sizes and the set of three depending on availability.

Choosing the right diameter

A simple rule used by many interior designers: add the length and width of the room in metres, multiply by 10, and you get a pendant diameter in centimetres. A 4 × 4 m room calls for a pendant of about 80 cm.

Above a table, work from the table instead: a pendant of about half to two thirds of the width of the tabletop. For a table 90 cm wide, a pendant of 40 to 60 cm.

Setting the height

  • Above a table: leave about 65 to 80 cm between the bottom of the pendant and the tabletop. Low enough to create a bubble of light, high enough to see the person opposite you.
  • In a walkway (hallway, corridor, living room): keep at least 2 m between the floor and the bottom of the pendant, so nobody bumps into it.
  • Above a bed: hang the pendant off to one side, or hang two, one on each side, instead of bedside lamps.

The bulb and the wiring

This is the question people forget, and the one that matters most on installation day.

  • On several models, the bulb is not included (this is the case for the Kaki and Crème rope pendants). The CHIPS pendant is sold on its own, without cable, lamp holder or bulb: you will need a pendant kit.
  • Choose a warm white bulb (around 2,700 K). With brass and rope, cold light flattens the materials.
  • Have the pendant connected by an electrician if you are not confident, especially for large diameters.

Lights under 60 cm in diameter ship to Mondial Relay pickup points in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Poland. From 60 cm in diameter, it is a large-format piece, too bulky for a pickup point: get in touch before ordering; depending on the size, collection is free at our shop in Mons (22 rue du Miroir) or we deliver on quotation.
